I picked them while running through a wooded area on the edge of the lake -- snapped them, somewhat regretfully, from their source and stuffed them in the pocket of my windbreaker with fumbling, numb hands. It was spring. My feet were wet with slushy snow, puddle spray and half-frozen beaver pond. There was the telltale sound of robin song, a strange warmth to the breeze, the delicately burgeoning buds that have become the shape of hope to me.
