The first time I ever visited the great state of Idaho was the day I moved to Idaho. As I drove our U-Haul truck over the Utah-Idaho state line a swallowtail fluttered past on the breeze and I caught a brief view of it before the truck blew on by into what would become my home state. I took it as an excellent sign that good things were coming my way.
Swallowtails have been my favorite butterfly since childhood, their elongated wingtips and high contrast patterning is exotic and I always yell out “SWALLOWTAIL” when I see one. They’re special to me even though they are relatively common.
Like so many of my designs, these necklaces began with my own wanting for this exact piece of jewelry and then I wondered if some of you might want something similar and before I knew it I had swallowtails on the go. They’re a kind of patron saint of the garden, a sign of good things to come.
